Found right next to the bustling Burmah Road, Middle House is a charming restaurant run by a lovely couple, offers a taste of a home with its hearty and soul-warming home-cooked Western dishes. Step in the place and you will instantly feel the homey-welcoming vibe, with a mix of both Western and local elements/ knick-knacks. The menu offers an array of home-cooked Western-European delights- Soups, Salads, Mains (including their signature Pork Chop), Pasta as well as their best-selling dessert... Rum and Kahlua-infused Tiramisu. Not a place with fancy setup or eye-catchy decor but more for solid, home-cooked food.
Many Thanks to Middle House for hosting us.
Soup lovers should go for their home-cooked Tomato Soup, served with their freshly baked Focaccia bread. The Tomato Soup has a balanced medley of sweet, sour and savory notes; perfect for starter. It is uncommon to find Rosti on the menu but Middle House's rendition is a far cry from the Swiss delicacy. While the ingredients are identical- Potatoes and Bacon, but the presentation/texture is different. It is crumbly and less crispy, though the flavor-combo is quite similar. It feels like something your mom would cook for you at home, nothing fancy but oddly satisfying.
For those who like flaky Chicken Pie, try Middle House's. All orders are served with their home-made Salad (a mix of Kidney Beans, Chick Peas, Onions, Lettuce and dressed over their home-made Vinaigrette). The Chicken Pie is expertly baked- light, flaky and crisp with delicious, creamy Chicken filling. The portion might be a bit small for some.
Many regular patrons return to Middle House for their signature Pork Chop- a slab of thick cut grilled Pork Chop served with home-made Apple sauce and Black Pepper sauce. It has the right meat to fat ratio. If you enjoy your Pork Chop with a fair share of Pork fats, you will get these in Middle House. Not to say Fork-tender but the Pork Chop has a biteable-texture (has a little resistance but does not require huge effort to chew). One of the rare places to enjoy such home-cooked Pork Chop in Penang.
One of the must-have in Middle House would be their home-made Tiramisu, available in both non-alcoholic and alcoholic. The alcohol-infused Tiramisu is beyond amazing- real Mascarpone Cheese with a generous amount of Rum & Kahlua concoction... making it extremely moist and creamy. The Tiramisu is also delicately sweetened but if you would prefer an extra touch of sweetness and bite, try their Caramelized Almonds. The nutty texture will open another dimension to the sweet, creamy, boozy dessert.
