Mini Siam @ Lebuh Katz, Georgetown, Penang.

7 Siam Mini Market at Lebuh Katz is one of the go-to places for some imported Thai snacks and seasonings but the proprietor has taken a step further, opening up a new Thai restaurant on the upper floor of the unit. Enter via the small entrance right next to the mart, it will lead to you to the restaurant right above the mini mart. The restaurant has a big Thai menu, featuring many northern Thai delights, including Khao Soi (they are probably the first and only Thai restaurant in Penang to offer this) and various classic Thai dishes. The place is clean and spacious, the proprietor is also friendly and accommodating. With the superior food quality, we thought the price range is fair and reasonable. Do give it a try if you yearn for good Thai food.

We love the multi-dimensional Khao Soi, it has an indelible sweetness with a powerful spicy punch. The noodles were slightly-dente. With the extra crispy noodles, we thought the Northern Thai delicacy was delicious. Same for the case of Pad Thai, it was expertly cooked with the essential flavors. The texture of the noodles was spot on, probably one of the best around. We've also sang our praises on the Kaeng Som Seabass. The proprietor did share with us that their Kaeng Som is a little different, the ones we can find here are mostly Southern Thai Kaeng Som, whereas Mini Siam's is Northern Thai's version. The spiciness was there but it has a mellow, comfortable sweetness... making it a lot easier and lighter on the palate. None of the dishes disappoint here, we thought the food quality is above any average Thai restaurants.
