Cawan Kuey @ Sungai Ara, Penang.

Sharing the same space as Juma Homestay at Sungai Ara, Cawan Kuey only opens in the late afternoons. The Muslim-friendly cafe brilliantly uses the space right in front of a residential house, before the sun sets, the place is a little warm and stuffy so do come prepared. It has a simple menu with a couple of mains and some snacks/cakes. But mind you, the casual, relaxed seating arrangement is not quite suitable for main (we struggled a bit with the Bihun Sup) but more for enjoying light snacks or even cakes over coffee. Interesting vibe with wallet-friendly sweet treats, worth a look if you are looking for Halal options.

The Bihun Sup Daging was the only savory main item available and we were glad that we ordered it. We had a choice to choose between Chicken or Beef and we had the latter one. The meat was a little overly chewy but the Soup was nicely cooked. It has a distinctive Turmeric flavor followed by a mellow, herbaceous flavor. We also added their home-made Sambal to the dish and it became more dimensional. The introduction of heat and spices definitely up the rank; we did not expect this to turn out as our favorite order for the visit. The signature Croffle was not shabby, the texture was lovely with a nice crisp. It has a buttery aroma too but the dessert was killed by the over-doze of Chocolate syrup, making it overly sweet to our liking. The Pandan Gula Melaka Cake was nothing out of the ordinary, the ersatz Cream was disappointing and the sweet, smoky Gula Melaka flavor was muted.
