Hidden in one of the heritage houses at Jalan Masjid, off Chulia Street (behind the famous Sky Hotel Char Siew Rice)… Chu Bee Taste of Home 宅滋味 seeks to offer diners heart-warming home-cooked dishes. This is in line with the name of the place- "Chu Bee", which means the Taste of Home in Teo Chew dialect. The place has a simple setting and rather small menu, featuring some of their best offerings with a mix of classic local Chinese delights and Western dishes. While the place is homey and cozy, it is less accommodating for bigger group of diners... especially on peak hours, so do plan your trip accordingly.
Some items were not available on our visit, there were only limited options but fortunately we got to try their Kocha Taiwanese Chicken Bento Set which has a serving of braised Chicken Thigh, braised Tofu and Egg, Soup, Rice as well as dessert Jelly... a complete Chinese meal. The braised Chicken Thigh was exactly how local moms would cook... Soy sauce base with a mild sweet touch. Chu Bee's rendition veered towards the salty side but the meat was braised till fork tender. Everything worked well and best spooned over rice. A dish suitable for plant-based diners, the Eggplant Bento Set has grilled Eggplant drizzled over dark Soy sauce and topped with Fried Garlic. It was that straight-forward and simple, probably a flavor combo that everyone can imagine and unfortunately, we did not think it was that special. We also had their freshly steamed Chai Kueh- both Chives and Jicama. The fillings were very generous but the skin was overly soft-mushy to our liking, we would prefer something firmer and chewier.
