The joy of having a Mookata meal (Thai hotpot) is that one gets to enjoy both barbecue and hotpot in one go; while Penang has quite a few places offering the Thai hotpot, Tem Xin Charcoal Mookata is one of the latest spots available. Found at Beach Street (next to Ghee Hiang Beach Street), the restaurant is fully air-conditioned and equipped with many mobile air-coolers... seeks to provide a more comfortable hotpot dining experience. It's quite spacious to dine in for small groups but for bigger crowd, the place may be a little too cramped. The menu offering is pretty standard- Pork Belly, Chicken meat, some seafood and greens but the fact that they insist on using charcoal fire is a testament to their authenticity.
Set A (Rm 49/ serves 2-3 pax)
Chicken Slices (Rm 10)
The Mookata meal starts rolling by greasing the raw Pork lard cube over the pan, when the thing heats up, the fats just melt all over the place... creating an alluring aroma and flavor to the broth. Tem Xin uses vege stock for the hotpot broth... sweet on its own and even more flavorful after ingredients are cooked together. We personally recommend the Chicken slices... marinated in their own marination sauce- sweet, peppery and definitely unique in its own way. We also enjoyed how clear and clean the hotpot broth was.... well-seasoned with a bold vege sweetness. Also not to be missed was the home-made Chili dip... which can be quite hot to handle but that was definitely part of the "Thai" dining experiences.
