Under the umbrella of Edo Ichi group, Hachiban Izakaya 八番 is one of the latest additions to the group. Unlike other Japanese restaurants, Hachiban operates in Izakaya style. Traditionally, we would expect a menu with great focuses on drinking (alcohol), but Hachiban has quite an impressive spread. The main menu features many classic items that can be found in a Japanese restaurant as well as some dishes especially suitable for drinking; price points are however, slightly above average. The restaurant is fairly big and houses a grill bar with big seating capacity.
[Set Lunch] Mini Chirashi Don To Nabe Udon (Rm 37)
[Set Lunch] Mini Arare Kaisen Don To Nabe Udon (Rm 36)
[Yakitori] Chicken Thigh (Rm 6) and Chicken Thigh with Mentai Roe (Rm 8)
We were very tempted by the Set Lunch menu as it seems to provide good value in return. We had both Chirashi Don and Kaisen Don versions; the side dishes were all similar except the seafood Don. Each set comes with a bowl of seafood Don, Nabe Udon, Salad and Chawanmushi. The Nabe Udon was nicely executed with chewy, fat Udon topped with a runny Egg and Tempura Prawn. The broth was Shoyu-flavored but perfectly easy and clean on the palate. The Seafood Dons were equally delicious... the cuts were generous and fresh; the whole portion was quite big for one to finish entirely. We also had some skewers (Yakitori), both the Chicken Thigh and Chicken Thigh with Mentai Roe were good; though I would personally prefer salt version over the sweet Yakitori sauce.
