Being an island surrounded by waters, Penang is home to many beach-front restaurants with spectacular sea view. Some restaurants are off the beaten path but Aroi Mak is one of them that you can find right smack in town. It's hard to miss the place with its gigantic signage and can be found right next to the bustling Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah (right opposite to Northam Hotel Penang). The building was occupied as some Dim Sum restaurant earlier but Aroi Mak is a completely new restaurant under a different management (opened since May 2019). Aside from the sea view and the fresh ocean breeze, the place offers affordable but authentic Southern Thai food experience, backed with fresh Seafood supplies (with most dishes priced between RM 20- RM 30). Helmed by a Thai head Chef with more than 25 years of kitchen experience, expect the menu to come with chock-full of Thai delights. With a huge space that can accommodate more than 50 tables, the place is great for occasions, family-friendly dinners or any casual meals. Set lunch menu is also available on weekdays and Aroi Mak is also starting to be made available on Deliveryeat platform.
Many Thanks to Aroi Mak for hosting us that evening.

Thai-styled Fish Cakes 泰式鱼饼 (Rm 22)
Start off with the Thai-styled Fish Cakes- tender, silky fish paste deep fried till golden brown and served with tangy, sweet Thai Chili sauce. The fish cake itself carries bold Thai flavors with all the seasoning and herbs, with the Cucumber-added Thai Chili sauce, it feels more like an appetizer and a good start for the ensuing feast. Petai lovers would be glad to know that Aroi Mak serves the green beans with Prawns... the timeless combination, with a slight chili boost. Offering a bolder herbaceous flavor is Stir Fried Chicken with Thai Basil Leaves... the dish packed with a strong flavor of Basil, with the crunchy beans and juicy Chicken meat, the dish is best spooned over rice.
No Thai meal is complete without Tom Yum; for a cleaner, crispier Tom Yum Soup, go for the Seafood Clear Tom Yum Soup with bountiful amount of Seafood like Squid, Prawns and Fish. Though the herbs are not blended into paste, the Clear Tom Yum Soup equally packs a flavorful punch... refreshingly acidic sans the dreadful spiciness. For tummy-filler, try the Claypot Glass Noodles served with fresh River Prawn... expertly cooked and well-seasoned Glass Noodles with chewy texture is best to be enjoyed with luscious Seafood for the rich, irresistible flavors of the sea. Other seafood options that can potentially go with this dish are Crabs, Mantis Prawns etc.
