Lao Huo Tang Restaurant 老火汤 @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

All day... whole year long, anytime is a great time for boiled Soups. Consuming soup is a traditional Chinese way to keep the body "neutral" or "balance"; and we all know the health benefits they are bringing. Hailed from Singapore, Lao Huo Tang Restaurant 老火汤 is a Soup-specialist that has been churning out delicious Chinese Soups since 2008. The branch in Gurney Plaza is its first branch in Penang, taking over the lot previously owned by Sakae Sushi on 3rd floor at New Wing. Like most Chinese restaurants, the interior decor sure brings out the Chinese dining atmosphere. Soup options take up a great portion of the menu, with some Chinese stir-fry dishes. Apart from the comforting and invigorating Soups, another beautiful part of Lao Huo Tang is diners are allowed to refill their soup orders once.

Apple and Pear Soup 老火苹果雪梨汤 (Rm 20.80)

Sea Coconut Soup 老火海底椰鸡汤 (Rm 29.80)

Buddha Jump Over The Wall 老火佛跳墙 (Rm 45.80)

Seafood Hor Fun with Gravy 海鲜滑蛋河 (Rm 23.80)

Water Spinach Cuttle Fish 鱿鱼蕹菜 (Rm 25.80)

We thought it would be wiser to order something that normal households would not be able to cook and we were right. Buddha Jump Over The Wall was a show-stopper; the soup carried an in-depth yet subtle flavor which fully accentuated from the dried seafood... every sip contained a bold umami flavor. Ingredients found in the soup were Fish Maw, dried Shitake Mushrooms, Chicken and Abalone slices.

Sea Coconut Soup possessed lighter flavor but it's the type of soup that you can keep drinking without feeling too heavy on the palate. If you prefer fruitier flavor, the Apple and Pear Soup would be for you. We love the fact that the Soups were delicately seasoned without much oil floating on top, certainly suits the healthy lifestyle that we go after in modern days. If you must know, the Seafood Hor Fun and Water Spinach Cuttle Fish were nothing out of the ordinary... we also thought the latter one was somewhat steeply priced (for that measly portion).
