Pallet Garden Cafe @ Carnarvon Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Found in an unusual spot of Carnarvon Street (near to the entrance to Kimberley Street), Pallet Garden Cafe only opens in late afternoon and serves a rather uncommon menu. The 2-storey cafe runs as a food eatery as well as a place to drink; the food menu however, is not shabby at all. Though the options are pretty limited, the taste would not disappoint. The small menu features 3 main items- DD Noodles, Bak Ki (Pork Meat Soup) and Pork Lard Rice... as well as some side dishes. The lack of air-conditioners however, would frustrate the heat-intolerant but if you would not mind the tropical heat, this place is worth a look... especially its home-styled Hokkien dishes.

Pallet Garden Cafe's signature Bak Ki Soup comes with 3 choices- Rice, Mee Sua (面线) and Dou Qian Noodles (豆签). We had it with Mee Sua instead... the noodles were lightly doused with Shallot Oil. The soup was deliciously cooked, it was multi-dimensional. Not only that it was cooked with Meat but the Chef has cleverly added in Clams as well... for the seafood sweetness. It was not too oily nor over-seasoned, just comfortable enough to go with the noodles. If you like it with a touch of spiciness, enjoy it with their home-made Chili paste (available in various choices).

Another proud creation by Pallet Garden Cafe- Turmeric Chicken Diao Diao Mee... deep fried Turmeric-marinated Chicken served with instant noodles-like noodles. But according to the proprietor, the noodles were custom-made and were different from the ordinary ones. True enough, the noodles were not oily and worked perfectly well with the home-made Chili paste. All in all, we were pretty pleased with the food quality here.
