Spicy Hot Pot Restaurant (重庆香辣煲) @ CY Choy, Georgetown, Penang.

Not to be confused with other Chong Qing Hot Pot restaurants, Spicy Hot Pot Restaurant (重庆香辣煲) is a true blue Ipoh brand that recently opened up a new branch in Georgetown. As the name suggests, the restaurant specializes in offering Chong Qing-inspired Hot Pot items. But unlike any of its competitors, this particular restaurant offers Hot Pots in smaller scale. You need not gather a group of friends in order to enjoy the Hot Pot, at Spicy Hot Pot Restaurant, there are portions meant for individuals. It has a good variety ranging from Chicken, Fish, Prawns, Pork to Lamb.... cooked in Sze Chuan-inspired sauce. Finish the meat and broth will then be added to make it into Hot Pot; diners can now head to the display fridge for additional Hot Pot items (categorized and priced according to the color of the plates). While we did not think the food quality is more superior here, we thought the place offers great flexibility especially to accommodate smaller dining groups or individuals.

Chicken Hot Pot 鸡公煲 (Rm 24.90)

The small portion of Chicken Hot Pot was just nice enough for the 2 of us. There is a range of spiciness you can choose from. We picked the middle one and thought it was just alright (not that spicy for us). The seasoning was bold, in fact, a little too bold for us (we were then told that it would be better to enjoy with Rice). The Chicken on the other hand, was tender and well-cooked. Flavors were well-absorbed and they were quite generous with the condiments (Capsicum, Onions, Carrots etc).

Hot Soup was then added to turn it into a Hot Pot. Flavors were bolder and heavier as it boiled longer, it became too heavy on the palate. We developed severe thirst that evening (after the meal). The Chicken Hot Pot was good on its own but might not be the case when Soup was added (to turn into Hot Pot). Also, it will take longer time to boil due to the use of Ignition Gel in lieu of proper gas stove.
