Lou Xiang Seafood Porridge (楼香海鲜粥) @ Simpang Ampat, Penang.

A short drive from Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah bridge (also known as the Penang 2nd Bridge) will land you at the southern mainland of Penang... an area with many hidden gems waiting for foodies to uncover. At the heart of Simpang Ampat, Lou Xiang Seafood Porridge (楼香海鲜粥) is like a communal dining space for the residents residing in the neighborhood, serving staples and tummy-pleasing dishes like Koay Teow Th'ng, Fish Noodles and Crab Porridge. In fact, the Seafood Porridge is also known to serve some of the greatest Crab Porridge around (and braised Chicken); many travel far just to have a taste on the Porridge. Be there early if you want to skip the queue, it gets crowded in the evenings, especially on weekends. We must concur that this is indeed one of the better places for Crab Porridge, their braised Chicken with Soy Sauce is not to be missed either.

Crab Porridge/ by weight (Rm 66 for 2 pax)

Braised Chicken with Soy Sauce (Rm 14/ half bird)

Blanched Octopus (Rm 12/ small)

Blanched Helicopter Clams (Rm 8/ small)

Steamed Flower Clams with Sour-Spicy Sauce (Rm 12/ small)

Lou Xiang's signature Crab Porridge is one of the must-orders. Unlike those that are cooked for hours, Lou Xiang's Porridge has the rice-shape maintained; but the seafood sweetness is not compromised. Our order was served with 2 relatively huge mud crabs, and for the price of Rm 66, we thought it was a price worth-paying for. While the Crab Porridge was amazing, their Braised Chicken with Soy Sauce was equally delicious. The Chicken was most tender with a mellow sweetness and sleek Rose-wine flavor. Good on its own but even better with their home-made Chili dip. One of the rare dishes that I am willing to go all out to eat again.

Other Seafood dishes were alright, probably the earlier two outshined the rest but the prices have been really competitive so if you are on the lookout for an inexpensive seafood meal, do give this place a try.

  1. I saw the display showing that smoked duck breast priced only RM1 per piece, that's cheap!
