Aloi Happy Thai @ Phuah Hin Leong, Pulau Tikus, Penang.

Started as a home-stay, the proprietor of Penang Old House decided to expand its business operation and venture into food business along with his wife. The simple Thai menu can be related to the wife's Thai roots, though not extensive, it is good enough for a quick Thai fix. The menu comprises of the commonly seen Salad to classic Thai mains (Tom Yum or Stir Fry), with a blend of Thai-Fusion dishes like Green Tea Spaghetti. Setting is most homey and down to earth and the prices are most affordable, though not exactly a full-fledged Thai restaurant, it should be good enough for satiate your cravings for Thai food. Aloi Happy Thai is right opposite to Kai Curry Bar at Phuah Hin Leong Street.

Papaya Salad (Rm 7)

Green Curry Spaghetti (Rm 10)

Tom Yum Goong with Rice (Rm 10)

Red Ruby Dessert (Rm 3)

A meal at Aloi Happy Thai can be very affordable, with most items priced at Rm 10 or lesser. The Papaya Salad hit the perfect notes- crunchy, acidic with a gentle spicy punch. The Green Curry Spaghetti was a nice change to the usual Tom Yum Spaghetti, though the curry was not as thick and rich as we would have hoped, the seasoning was spot on and amalgamated well with the Pasta. The Malaysian in us yearned for a spicy note so we added loads of their Thai pickled Chilies which on the irony, turned out to be lip-burningly hot. We cooled ourselves down with a serving of Thai Red Ruby Dessert- mildly sweetened but addictively crunchy with a fruity touch. It can be however, creamier. Tom Yum Goong was a disappointment, not that it was not good but we thought the quintessential Tom Yum element was missing, as though we were having some other sour-spicy soup instead.

  1. I have yet to get the chance to try their red ruby. So far just their mango sticky rice and I do love that a lot!
