Swallow @ The Saw Emporium, Gat Lebuh Macallum, Georgetown, Penang.

Packed into an old-defunct sawmill- "The Saw Emporium" in the heart of Georgetown, Swallow is a project/ event founded by Tharin Tan, the 4th generation owner whom decided to turn the enormous space into a multi-concept dining destination, creating a platform for food pop up events. An annex of the 67 year old heritage building has been refurbished and transformed into a space with minimalist set-up yet intriguing at the same time. It currently houses more than 5 renowned and established food and beverage outlets, with some of them being award-winning brands. The top establishments that are currently participating in "Swallow" are Teppei Syokudo (one of Singapore's best Japanese restaurants), SOi 55 (features traditional-contemporary Thai dishes), Embers (offers barbecue delights with a touch of Asian flavors), TAPS Beer Bar (The Bar Awards KL 2017 Best Beer Bar) and Qwenchers (juice bar that offers fresh fruit juices). "Swallow @ The Saw Emporium" is expected to run until Quarter 1 of 2018, till then, there will be some occasional pop up kitchens by guest Chefs or special programs curated by the management; more updates will be shared on their Facebook Page.

Many Thanks to the folks behind Steamships for hosting us that evening.

Teppei Syokudo's signature Ten Don was beyond amazing- carefully cooked Japanese Rice loaded with bountiful of Tempura (a mixture of Seafood and Greens) and served over some sweet Japanese sauce. The condiments were nicely battered and the flavors were amazing. We love the crisp combination of the Tempura and chewy Japanese Rice while the sauce added a little sweet-savory touch.

SOi 55's Crispy Thai Mango Salad left us with a deep impression. The crunchy tropical fruit was dressed in sweet and sour dressing as well as other Thai Salad condiments, topped with some crisp Tempura-like Vegetables. The overall flavor combo worked for us, the refreshing crunch and acidity of the Salad cuts through the greasiness of the deep fried vegetable yet, introducing another crisp-crunchy dimension to the dish.

We raised our eyebrows when we were introduced the Kimchi Butter by Ember's. It worked magically with the crispy Mantou; apart from its creamy nature, there was this addictive fragrance infused in it, not so much on the acidity but the distinctive aroma of Kimchi. The Mantou carried a hint of sweetness so the duo paired perfectly well together. The Kimchi Butter is also served on the grilled Prawns. For a booze, we recommend trying TAPS Beer Bar's array of imported Beers; teetotalers head to Qwenchers for healthy fruit juices otherwise.

  1. I can't see the shop sign anywhere on the building.

  2. Cool name, but are those all disposable containers? I cringe at the environmental impact with all of that waste.
