Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant (蟹王香海鲜饭店) @ Sungai Ara, Penang.

Navigation skills are important to locate Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant (蟹王香海鲜饭店), a 2 year old restaurant branched from Petaling Jaya. The restaurant well-hidden at the residential neighborhood of Sungai Ara specializes in serving Crabs and Seafood dishes. Choices are aplenty here (Malaysian-Chinese chu char dishes) but some might not be available so it is best to call to make reservation in advance. For crabs, the restaurant offers more than 12 serving methods but the signature remains as the Malaysian classic Chili Crabs; subject to availability, the restaurant offers Super Crabs as well... with each crab weighs more than 900 grams. Price points are of upper-middle but the wide variety is set to please, the air-conditioned restaurant can be a good choice as a casual family dining spot. To find Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant, turn into the junction right in front of Hope Children on Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim and go straight (via Persiaran Relau) until you almost hit another junction, the restaurant can be found on the left... tucked in a semi-detached corner unit (previously Cherry Blossom Thai Restaurant for those who are in the know).

Chili Prawns 辣子生虾 (Rm 11.90/ 100 grams)

Deep Fried Golden Pillow Bun 云丝卷 (Rm 4)

Steamed Jade Perch 清蒸玉鲈 (Rm 6.90/ 100 grams)

Salted Kampung Chicken 咸香鸡 (Rm 25/ half bird)

Stir Fried Four Kings Vege 四大天王 (Rm 17/ medium)

Stir Fried Octopus with Dried Shrimp 虾米八爪鱼 (Rm 30/ medium)

La La Bee Hoon 蛤蜊炒米粉 (Rm 17/ medium)

Crabs were not available on our visit (sold out) so we had the Chili Crab replaced with freshwater Prawns. The enticing Chili-egg gravy in red hue was delicious and worked perfectly well with the soft-pillowy Bun. It has a hint of Chilies and was sweet, it can be monotonous after a few bites though; we'd prefer the spicy-factor to be bolder. The Prawns were nevertheless, fresh and plump. Equally delicious was the Jade Perch, a type of River fish native to the Australian waters but have since made available in the Malaysian market. Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant is one of the few that offers this delicacy. We had ours steamed and served with premium Soy sauce- the flesh has a delicate texture, not entirely rich in fats but very satisfying when enjoyed with the premium Soy sauce. But the dish that stole the limelight was the signature "Lala" Bee Hoon (Clams), the vermicelli noodles were meticulously cooked to the right texture and backed by a powerful-lovely charred aroma (wok hei). While the Clams can be more sizable, we thought the overall combination was good; the addition of the Clams provided a hint of the ocean wholesomeness to the rice noodles.

Salted Kampung Chicken and stir-fried Octopus with Dried Shrimps paled when in comparison with the remaining dishes. The former one had a rather dry texture and the flavor did not shine. It was a tad greasy to my liking as well. The latter one was a huge disappointment. It was over seasoned (drenched in dark Soy sauce) and the texture was rough (they may have chopped the Octopus too fine). Some hits and misses but overall, their signature dishes were all good.

  3. The octopus looked the most appetizing in your photo, I think the combination can be quite nice, maybe some minor tweaking is needed.

  4. The Chilly Prawns look yummy to go with the deep fried golden pillow!
This is interesting to note that the residential area of Sungai Ara is full of good restaurants now. I must visit this place on my next visit as it is near my parent's Regency Heights condo.

  5. bad experience dining there...i ordered salted eggs prawn, kailan and steam eggs...The salted egg prawns were tiny and only 6 prawns which costs me rm40 which is not worth..The kailan, its taste is insipid..Just only 3 dishes, it costs me rm70++ ...If the food is good, I will be happy to paid but the food quality doesn't worth the food...
