Long before the rise of artisan European bread, local Toasts were staples for any working class in Penang; the locals' favorite way of enjoying a crisp-fluffy toast would be none other than Kaya Butter Toast with soft-boiled Eggs. But Tasty Toasty is churning out Toast with style... giving the bread an upgrade. Unlike the typical cafe fare, Tasty Toasty has a menu dedicated entirely to Toast/ Bun, with a small selection of Pasta dishes. We were told that all Toast/ Bun are made in-house so there will be no preservatives or artificial flavoring. Competitive price points but they don't skimp on food ingredients... impressively done for a humble beginning. Tasty Toast can be found in front of Bandar Baru Supermarket at Cantonment Road (behind Pulau Tikus Wet Market).
Scallop with Ebiko Mayo Sandwich (Rm 13.90)
Teriyaki Bonito Flakes (Rm 4.80/ ala-carte)
Thick Toast got dressed up with Bonito Flakes and dashes of Teriyaki sauce as well as squiggles of Mayonnaise. It was pretty straight-forward... merely Toast dip with Teriyaki sauce, it was sweet but somehow monotonous. The Bonito Flakes had not done much in its aid, the concept was interesting but would require some refinement.
Scallop with Ebiko Mayo Sandwich on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise. 8 voluptuous pan-seared Scallops with a generous Ebiko Mayo spread were seen, together with a handful of greens.... sandwiched between 2 pieces of beautiful Toast. Needless to say, the Scallops were amazing while the Ebiko (Shrimp Roe) offered a burst of Seafood essence and together with the creamy Mayonnaise, the combination spoke for itself. Such portion, beauty and satisfaction... only for Rm 13.90 nett.
There are quite a handful of imaginative and playful combinations, we'd suggest trying all those in lieu of safe options like the standard Kaya Butter Toast with soft-boiled Eggs.
