What happens if one of the local favorites- Koay Teow Th'ng got an upgrade? Find it out at Tung Kee Abalone Koay Teow Th'ng at Sri Bahari Road, a newly opened restaurant housed in one of the latest heritage-restoration projects in town. The Koay Teow Th'ng specialist boasts over its Abalone Koay Teow Th'ng or similar posh-offering... the lavish upgrade consists of Seafood wholesomeness and a heaps of meat. But everything comes with a price and that theory applies to Tung Kee's Koay Teow Th'ng as well, a basic bowl of Koay Teow Th'ng costs Rm 8.90 here while the premium ones would cost Rm 13.90 and Rm 35.90. As far as ambiance is concerned, the place is fully air conditioned with comfortable seating space.
Premium Abalone Koay Teow Soup (Rm 13.90)
Premium Abalone Dry Koay Teow (Rm 13.90)
Curry Mee was out of order and Koay Teow Th'ng was the only option. We had both versions- Dry and Soup. The former one was lightly dressed in light Soy Sauce and Pork Lards, topped with minced Meat and julienned Chicken meat, served with a bowl of Soup with loads of Seafood- canned Clams, Sea Asparagus, home-made Fish Balls, Shrimp, mock Abalone slices etc. The choice of Koay Teow is the key. Tung Kee did well and they have chosen the right type- light and silky smooth texture so the dish went well.
Soup version saw the similar ingredients, the crystal clear broth was sweet and possessed bold seasoning; a little overly "flavorful" that we found it suspicious. Apart from that, we found the Koay Teow Th'ng was good, probably slightly above par. In view of the hefty price tag, we do not see the place as a place that we'd patronize regularly; good but not to the extent that we see ourselves coming back regularly.
Blanched Bean Sprouts (Rm 3)
Steamed Chicken (Rm 9)
We had Steamed Chicken and blanched Bean Sprouts for sides that evening, the former dish saw a few pieces of chopped Chicken Thigh, served on a bed of blanched Bean Sprouts, The Chicken was standard-ordinary but the real draw was their home-made Chili dip, it packed a flavorful punched- fiery hot but well-balanced with a gentle acidic touch. But to have that portion for Rm 9, we thought it was a little expensive... same for the blanched Bean Sprouts.
