**Update: The place has since ceased its business operations.**
Slappy Cakes, a renowned Pancake specialist from Portland, has revolutionized the conventional way of serving Pancakes as breakfast. Diners are no longer being served but instead, they have to cook theirs. One Garage Slappy Cakes at M Mall, Times Square Penang is a place where the adults can enjoy traditional Chinese Steamboat while the children can partake in a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) activity by cooking their own Pancakes. Choose from the available ready-to-cook Batter and your preferred condiments to add on to the Pancakes. Next door to Slappy Cakes is One Steamboat, the concept is equally interesting as well. There are a few huge display fridges and the steamboat ingredients are well-displayed. Diners can spend some time to "shop" for their preferred ingredients to be added to the hot pot. The Pancakes are reasonably priced but not quite the case for the steamboat; service however, was attentive and we were well-taken care of.
We had the simplest flavor- Buttermilk Batter (Rm 9) with Maple Syrup (Rm 3.50), Cinnamon Creme Fraiche (Rm 3.50), Crispy Turkey Bacon (Rm 3.50), Hazel Nuts (Rm 3.50) and Bananas (Rm 3.50). Cooking the Pancakes was easy, simply squeeze the Batter on the sizzling hot pan and pan fry them. We had ours with Turkey Bacon and Maple Syrup, the Bacon could be crispier and the Maple Syrup could be thicker. They might be using some inexpensive brand in lieu of the high quality ones. Cinnamon Creme Fraiche possessed a fake-artificial flavor and it did not melt despite being placed right next to the fire source.
There was not much tummy space left after having the Pancakes we had a taste of their Steamboat series. We had Teo Chew Fish Soup Base (Rm 9) and Mix Balls (3 types of home-made Fish Balls/ Rm 25), Udon (Rm 5) and Assorted Vegetables (Rm 12). We love the home-made Fish Balls, they were expertly crafted. Not only that the texture was amazing, the flavor was equally toothsome either. There were some Prawn Balls, Fish Balls with dried Mandarin Orange Peel and possible some Squid Balls; none of them disappoint... though the only downfall was the price. The broth was tasty either but probably suspiciously "tasty". Their Steamboat ingredients certainly did not come cheap and for that price, I'd prefer to have it at somewhere else.
