Khun De Thai Restaurant @ Jelutong, Penang.

If you have been following my blog for the past one year, you would have read my review on this restaurant before, so I was invited to this restaurant (along with some bloggers) for a review again recently and we get to sample some of their signature dishes. Khun De Thai is a humble Thai restaurant located in the bustling street of Jalan Teh Ewe Lim, from Green Lane/ Jalan Masjid Negeri, drive into Jalan Teh Ewe Lim (you will find Lam Wah Ee hospital on your right hand side), drive straight until you reach a traffic light, drive pass that traffic light and pay attention to your left hand side. You should able to find Khun De Thai restaurant shortly. As the name of the restaurant suggested, the place serves Thai food with affordable prices. There are quite a lot of choices to choose from, where Thai food lovers might find it an interesting place to dine in. The only problem is that they have limited parking (can only fit in up to 3 cars right in front of their restaurant), otherwise, you would have to find yourself a parking space at the road side.

Our meal kick started with a dish which rarely be found in any other Thai food restaurants. Prawn Sashimi with Spicy Sauce (Rm 18) is a very unique and special dish created by Khun De Thai, where their concept was to have the succulent and fresh Prawns topped with some home-made Spicy sauce. As for me, I find the dish a bit odd to me, as in the texture of the Prawns was not as springy as I thought it would be, probably due to the time elapsed for photography. Not a fan of this dish.

Miang Pa (Rm 14- Regular), Thai style salad, was one of their signature dishes served to us. It tasted quite similar to Miang Kam (traditional snack in Thailand), it differs in terms of the fillings, where Khun De Thai has added some Deep Fried Dory Fish. To enjoy, simply wrap the fillings with the Chaphlu leaves, you will need not any Lime juice as they have blended in some bites of Lemon into the fillings. Not a bad choice for an appetizer but the dish lacked of some juiciness to my liking.

Yet another signature dish of theirs, Deep Fried Fish with Mango Kerabu (prices vary depending on market rate, ranging from Rm 35 to Rm 48 approximately). The dish comes in a rather big portion, I have no complaints for their Mango Kerabu but I personally find the Deep Fried Fish a bit too dry. It was okay to go with the Mango Kerabu but it would be too dry to savor the fish separately.

A Thai-cuisine can never be completed without a serving of Tom Yum. This was their Tom Yum Goong/ Prawns (this was Large- Rm 30, small for Rm 19). The Tom Yum soup was scorching hot where some of us were sweating while savoring this delectable Tom Yum. I do not have much complaints (nor compliments) for the soup but some of the bloggers find it too salty. It would be ideal to go with some rice.

Prawn Nugget (Rm 3/ piece, minimum order of 2 pieces) was crispy and savory. I was expecting the inner texture of the Prawn Nugget to be springy and juicy but it turned out that it was very normal, not springy enough in my opinion. This dish suits those who prefer crispy and crunchy food.

I'd say their Bomb Nugget (Rm 15- Regular) was decent. Bomb Nugget, meat balls stuffed with minced pork, shrimps,  and salted duck egg yolk. It comes with their uniquely home-made sweet and sour sauce which consists of some cucumbers. The sauce was refreshing enough, to balance up the oiliness of the nuggets.

Fried Egg Otak Seafood (Rm 12- Regular) works perfectly well with rice. The perfectly fried Omelette possessed a distinct aroma, together with the fragrance from Kaffir leaves. Some of the bloggers find it good but I find it too common for me, more like Otak-infused Omelette, nothing worth to shout over.

Choo Chi Squid (Rm 15- Small, Rm 25- Large) was one of the most disappointing dishes of the night. First of all, the Squids were Deep Fried and not served blanched/steamed instead. Next, the Deep Fried Squids were left too oily, the Choo Chi sauce did not stand out to us either. I can't even take a second bite due to its oiliness.

Thai Green Curry Chicken (Rm 14- Small, Rm 20- Large) was rather diluted, I would prefer a Thai Green Curry to be slightly thicker. The Curry has a very strong Basil-like flavor which I don't adore much personally. Never a fan of Green Curry anyway.

Nangka Dessert/ Tab Tim Krob (Rm 4.50 per bowl) comes with a lot of Santan/ Coconut Milk. Some of the bloggers find it too heavy while I was perfectly okay with it. The only complaint was the dessert lacked of the Nangka flavor. It has some sliced Nangka/ Jackfruit but nevertheless, they were still too insignificant to create the strong aroma. Too much ice added to the dessert too.

I was very excited when I knew they were going to serve us this Thai Pumpkin Custard/ Sankaya (Rm 3 or Rm4 per slice *unconfirmed*) where Coconut Mlik will be added to provide the Custard-like texture inside the Pumpkin. This dessert works perfectly okay for me, I wasn't too sure whether it was me, or the Pumpkin tasted like Sweet Potato but I was later told by another blogger that they have used a not well-ripen Pumpkin to cook with. I like the fact that this dessert wasn't too sweet and just perfect to end the meal off.
