Petaling Street Famous Porridge @ Kuala Lumpur

During our previous visit to Malacca for the event-- A Date With Bloggers 2012, we actually stopped by at Kuala Lumpur for the transit. We arrived there too early for the LRT to operate and hence, we have decided to hunt for some food for our early breakfast. Criz from Crizfood.com suggested that we search around the Petaling Street area since its just a stone-throw distance away from Pudu Bus Terminal. The place should not be too hard to locate as the whole Petaling Street will basically be very quiet and dark except this stall. Ambiance-wise, please do not expect too much as this place is a market area, and you should expect it to be that range.



The group of us had different porridge sets, this was Meat Balls Porridge Set (Rm 5). It comes with some pork meat balls too. The porridge was very smooth and soft, some of us in the group find this a bit bland but it was perfectly okay for me, after all, it was meant to be a light breakfast.


There are two ways to savor this Ikan Haruan/Snake-head fish/生鱼 porridge set (Rm 6). You may opt for the ready-to-eat set, where they will prepare and soak the fish fillet into the piping hot porridge for you OR you may opt to have them (the fish fillet and porridge) serve separately. You will end up having a bowl of plain porridge and a plate of thinly sliced fish fillet garnished with chopped spring onions and parsley (shown in picture). I will personally prefer to have them serve separately as you can control the smoothness of the fish fillet, if you prefer the fish to be slightly raw, you may just dip into the piping hot porridge for a few seconds. However, if you have opted for the ready-to-eat version, the fish fillet will be completely cooked and you don't get to enjoy the semi-raw texture. I would also prefer if the fish fillet can be sliced a bit thicker just to give the extra bite. The fish fillet basically "dissolved" completely after I've soaked them into the porridge for a few minutes.


This was their Boiled Chicken Porridge Set (Rm12.50 for the chicken and Rm2.50 for plain porridge). To my surprise, Chloe from Applefish1021 commented that it was one of the best boiled chicken she ever had. The chicken meat was very smooth and juicy to her liking. It may sound expensive at first but they did provide us the whole chicken thigh which I presumed it to be "okay" for KL standards.


It was too "plain" if all of us had porridge only so we've decided to have an extra order on this Chee Cheong Fun/Steamed Rice Roll for Rm 5. Unlike those in Penang where the sauce will be mixed with Prawn paste. Sauce aside, the texture of the steamed rice roll was actually pretty impressive, the generous amount of sesame seeds added does give this dish some extra marks too. This dish was pretty okay for me but most of them in our group find it a bit odd. Nevertheless, those in Penang still rules.


We had this extra order of Century Eggs for Rm 5 too. I am a huge fan of century eggs due to their chewy and bouncy texture. Century eggs work well with porridge too but it was rather expensive to have these few slices of century eggs for Rm5 and yet, pickled ginger was not provided to us as we usually get from those Loh Bak stalls in Penang.

  1. RM5 for that plate of century egg!? Expensive. I love eating porridge for breakfast, I am a Teochew. :)

    And absolutely love raw fish slices, yum yum.....

  2. I love porridge! There is also another one at the famous beef noodle shop Soong Kee which is also not too far from Pudu station. But that stall is much saltier.

  3. I'm a HUGE fan of century eggs too! Oh my!!

    By the way, I like my fish to be served separately too. I don't like them being overcooked.

  5. P.S. The beef noodle here is among the most famous in KL but I think it cannot match Kah Hiong in Kota Kinabalu - that one is simply out of this world! Since I had that, no beef noodle I have had anywhere else could measure up. Some may be good but will pale in comparison.
