La France Cafe and Restaurant @ Irrawaddy Road, Penang.

French cuisine has never been cheap and affordable in Penang. However, you can find affordable yet quality French cuisine here at Irrawaddy Road, exactly opposite to El Casa Restaurant. La France Cafe and Restaurant is operated by a couple where the husband is French and possesses a very foreign accent. Although the restaurant does not offer fancy or a wide variety of food but they strive to present the best dishes that they can cook for their customers. They are offering set lunch at an inexpensive price too, which is Rm16.80 nett, inclusive of a bowl of soup of the day, a main course and a cup of tea/coffee. In the month of November, their soup of the day will be Pumpkin Soup, main course can be either Pasta with Chicken and Mushroom Creamy Sauce or Toasted Wholemeal Bread with Pork Ham, Egg and Cheese and of course, a cup of icy cold milk tea or coffee.

Starting with their soup of the day, Pumpkin Soup with Garlic Bread. The soup was rather thick and the aroma of those spices used was just nice to light up the soup and not being too strong to snatch away the pumpkin flavor. The creamy pumpkin soup has a very awesome texture as well, although small pieces of pumpkins still can be eaten but they were very soft. Not to forget the garlic bread, they were rather the best garlic bread I have ever had, crispy and full of the buttery flavor, just nice to go with the soup, such a perfect entree for a meal.

Croc' Madame Classic (Toasted Wholemeal Bread with Pork Ham, Egg and Cheese). As you can see from the pictures, the wholemeal bread was being toasted to perfection and was still crispy. The side dishes given were sauteed potatoes and some salad with some unique dressing. They were decent to me but my friend dislike the over-whelming flavor of spices used in the sauteed potatoes. The pork ham possessed a smoky flavor and it complements well with the egg and cheese.

Pates Au Poulet (Pasta with Chicken and Mushroom Creamy Sauce). I never liked pasta in any white sauce but the first white sauce pasta I had in E&O Hotel Penang changed my mind and I would say this was the second. Truly delicious. Although Mushroom Creamy Sauce was used in this dish but the pasta was not too creamy. The cheese powder was just sufficient to bring out the cheesy flavor however, the chicken slices were more to the salty side in my opinion. This pasta is a must-try in this restaurant, recommended.

Aside from the set lunch, we have tried some of their dessert as well, this was their Crepes Suzette (Rm5.90). The plate was very hot the moment the dessert being served, one scoop of vanilla ice-cream was also added. The syrup contains some zesty flavor and I was told that the syrup was made of some kind of orange juice or lemon juice. The syrup was more to the sour side and the crepe was quite soft and complements well with the orange syrup and vanilla ice cream.

Crepe Compote (Rm6.80). The crepe has some apple being stuffed inside and some whipped cream was provided as well. The apple flavor complements well with the crepe and it was rather refreshing. Although some chocolate syrup was drizzles over the crepe but the dessert was not too sweet after all. I would recommend this over Crepe Suzette instead.

The Creme Brulee looks tempting but the price was on the higher side since they were priced at Rm8.90 each. I would definitely love to try these on when I have the chance next time. Other than Creme Brulee, they do serve some other French dessert as well, definitely a very suitable place with cozy ambiance for friends gathering.

    2. Oh... I remember that arrogant aunty who try to make her law in my house... Here is the reality: just like many bitter customers, you already show your level of stress at the moment you enter my place. We know exactly who comes to enjoy a good food and those who try to mess around... If you are not happy with your life, it is not my problem. Look at yourself before judging others. We do select our customers, naturally.

We have to respect a minimum of organization in our Cafe. I won't dismantle the whole place just because a big group suddenly arrive without reservation... Moreover with such a bad attitude...

Also, if some customers are too stubborn to understand that running a food business with only 2 persons is extremely tough, yes. I will personally help those kind of fussy people to look for other alternative... Till the beginning, you already show a negative attitude.

You can spread to the whole World (especially people like you) that in my house > The old adage “the customer is always right” is completely obsolete.

We are not rude... We are realistic. It is exactly people like you who always think that "I pay for it, so I have the right to monopolize, abuse and be rude!" that are personae non grata in my house.

      Thank you for sharing.
