Tankoya Yakiniku 炭烤日式烧烤炉 @ Fettes Road, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Meat lovers are definitely aware of Tankoya Yakiniku 炭烤日式烧烤炉, a well-established Japanese BBQ restaurant at Tanjung Tokong. As the name indicates, Tankoya specializes in offering Yakiniku, a Japanese-styled barbecue with Korean influences. This is also reflected on the menu, which offers diners a great variety of barbecue meats, Japanese and Korean dishes. The place has a typical barbecue restaurant setting... with indoor exhaust pipe hanging around and an open kitchen that allows diners to see the Chef in action. There's also a corner for Japanese floor seating towards the end; though the ventilation works, it is inevitable that the place is filled with charcoal-smokiness. While we are amazed with the superiority of the cuts of meat, we must say that the prices are very steep. For your benchmarking, the 5 of us spent around RM 500 on Shabu-Shabu and Yakiniku (with some sides and no alcohol) that evening.

Tankoya Set (Rm 185)

Salmon Belly (Rm 28)

Chicken Thigh (Rm 23)

Chige Seafood (Rm 26)

Chichimi (Rm 18)

Korean Cold Noodles (Rm 19)

We must concur that Tankoya serves some of the best cuts of the meat... none of the meat disappoint. Though most meats were seasoned, diners can opt to add in the Japanese-styled barbecue sauce... which offers another different type of flavor. Apart from the barbecue, we also had some side orders. Tankoya;s Chichimi is one of the most popular orders... perfectly light and crisp, especially delicious if you are enjoying with a serving of chilled Beer. A slight change to the Japanese theme, we also had a serving of the Korean Cold Noodles. We were skeptical at first but was more than happy to find that Tankoya's rendition was as good as any Korean restaurants in town. Fresh fruits like Watermelon and Apples were introduced to the Cold Noodles... as well as some Kimchi, to our surprise, the concoction was very refreshing. Delicious on its own but even better with some Wasabi; probably one of the best Korean Cold Noodles around.
