Ho Min San 好面善 @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

One of the latest additions to Gurney Plaza is Ho Min San 好面善, a noodle specialist offering a wide variety of Chinese-styled noodle dishes and some Hong Kong-influenced dishes. The price points are mid-range and reasonable. The restaurant can be found on the lower ground floor of Gurney Plaza. The restaurant space is limited and the table arrangement is quite near to each other so its more like a place for a quick fix (you can literally listen to the other table's conversation, the distance is too near). But our experience with their service crew was quite bad, we were there on a crowded Saturday evening. There was no proper signage on getting the number so we quietly joined the queue to enter the restaurant. The server noticed our presence but did not bother to ask further, when it was almost our turn to enter the restaurant, we were asked if we did get any number (and of course we did not since no one told us to do so). So we had to wait again, literally wasted 15 minutes of our time queuing... pretty poor crowd management I must say.

We were told that one of the best sellers would be the Tomato Soup base and so, we had the Beef Slices Noodle dish in Tomato Soup. The Tomato Soup possessed a clean, light and slight-sour after taste but it was quite comforting and easy on the palate. It was not too sweet nor sour, just nice and light enough to go with the noodles and Beef. We thought it was not too shabby but not good enough to leave us with a very deep impression nor we found it addictive. The Hong Kong-styled Beef Brisket Dried Noodles on the other hand, was pretty similar to those in Hong Kong. The sauce was somewhat like "Lou Sui" sauce (the sauce used to braise the meat) and the texture of the noodles was great. Top up Rm 5 for every order of a main course will entitle for a plate of Shanghainese Fried Dumplings. We did not quite enjoy the Fried Dumplings... we thought the filling was too porky (a peculiar pork stench), perhaps sticking to the mains is a better idea.
