Viking Steakhouse @ Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

Housed in one of the bungalows surrounded by luxurious condominiums at Tanjung Bungah, Viking Steakhouse has been operating for more than a year. With a name like Viking Steakhouse, one would expect the menu to be meat-focused but the restaurant boasts more than just a steakhouse. The menu has a great variety of Western dishes which span across Salads, Soups, Pasta and Seafood as well as an extensive wine list. Prices are slightly higher than average but in return, you will be dining in a modern, clean and cozy space.

[Ala- Carte] Wild Mushroom Risotto (Rm 26)

[Set Lunch] Smoked Duck Breast Pesto Fettuccine (Rm 38)

[Set Lunch] Classic Chilled Tenderloin (Rm 68/ 200 grams)

[Starter] Corn Soup with Garlic Bread

[Starter] Salad

[Dessert] Red Velvet Cake

To stretch our Ringgit further, we had their Set Lunch which seemed to be more value for money than ala-carte orders. The Smoked Duck Breast Pesto Fettuccine was delicious but it was a little odd as there was minimal hint of Pesto (or Basil). In fact, it felt like Carbonara... but it didn't matter as long as it was good. Classic Chilled Tenderloin on the other hand, was a little disappointing. Not that it was not cooked to the requested-doneness but the meat lacked of the alluring charred aroma. It was also too dry to our liking, we were expecting a burst of meat juice but no, there was not any. Proper steak knife was not given to us either, which left us wondering if they are indeed a proper steakhouse? The Tenderloin was served with Coleslaw and Mashed Potatoes.

We had an ala-carte order of Wild Mushroom Risotto... a hearty dish packed with earthy flavors. Shimeiji and Eryngii Mushrooms were heavily used in this dish and the texture was lovely. The Risotto rice was expertly cooked either but we thought the concoction can be creamier and with greater depth. It was rather monotonous towards the end. While most of the dishes were okay, none of them actually 'wow-ed' us, probably our expectations were too high.
