Mommy Irene Dessert @ Ayer Hitam, Penang.

Though there are myriad of options to satiate the crave for desserts but nothing beats a bowl of classic, traditional Chinese Tong Sui. To find one, make your way to Farlim... the neighborhood right next to the biggest Night Market in Penang. Set in a corner terrace unit, Mommy Irene Dessert is a nondescript eatery made up mostly regulars from the neighborhood. The dessert parlor churns out Cantonese-styled sweet soups cooked over charcoal fire... along with a small main menu. Desserts are naturally a specialty of theirs, notable ones include Durian Mung Bean Dessert. A casual, inexpensive place to get your cravings fixed.

Durian Mung Bean Dessert (Rm 4.50)

Beancurd Sheet Barley Dessert (Rm 4.50/ with Egg)

Cantonese Chicken Porridge (Rm 5.50)

Mommy Tom Yum Bee Hoon (Rm 4)

Cantonese-styled Waxed Meat Rice (Rm 5.50)

Starting with the mains, there are only 3 types of mains available- Waxed Meat Rice, Tom Yum Bee Hoon and Chicken Porridge. The Waxed Meat Rice uses ordinary Rice in lieu of Glutinous Rice... with Mushroom and Waxed Meat, delicately seasoned and the rice was nicely cooked with slightly soft (but not slouchy) texture. Equally delicious was the Tom Yum Bee Hoon... packed with bold Tom Yum flavor combined with crunchy Cabbage... light on the palate but satisfyingly delicious. The Chicken Porridge on the other hand, paled in comparison with the earlier two. It was okay but it felt a little monotonous and we would prefer deboned Chicken meat instead of a whole Chicken Wing in the Porridge. The Porridge was slowly cooked over Charcoal fire so it was imbued with a hint of delicately smoky aroma.

Ending the meal was Durian Mung Bean Dessert and Beancurd Sheet Barley Dessert; the former choice had a hint of Durian... discernible but not overwhelming, with a hint of smoky wood-fire essence. The latter option was pretty straight-forward, the only difference was the addition of hard-boiled egg... a typical Cantonese touch.
