Mae Salong Thai Restaurant @ Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Mae Salong is one of the most popular Thai restaurants in Sungai Petani, at the south of Kedah. It only takes a little more than half an hour drive to Sungai Petani from Penang, the town is less-busier than Penang but has many hidden gems around. Ask any Sungai Petani folks to recommend Thai food and most would suggest Mae Salong. The restaurant is a little off the beaten track and it takes a while to locate... imagine you need to go through winding, narrow village road to get there. The restaurant was established in early 2010 and has since become the de-facto Thai restaurant in town. It occupies a huge piece of land, the owner turned it into a "secret garden" surrounded by tropical trees with a pond in the middle. Dining tables are being setup on wooden structures to give you the "back to nature" impression. If you are lucky enough, you may catch some wildlife (like monkeys) over there or caged pets (like Rabbits, Chickens). There are ample choices for Thai food and all of them are reasonably priced.

Tom Yum Seafood (Rm 22/ small)

Kaeng Som Siakap (Rm 36/ market price)

Chicken Feet Kerabu (Rm 12)

Bean Curd Salad (Rm 10)

Thai-styled Stir Fried Vermicelli Noodles (Rm 7)

Stir Fried Glass Noodles (Rm 7)

While not all items were great but we do agree that all of them were of passable-quality. We recommend ordering their Thai-styled stir fried Vermicelli Noodles, though it may seem like a common dish but they have executed well. The noodles come with a heavy wok-hei punch. Together with its spicy Sambal, the flavors were amazing. Their Kaeng Som Siakap was not too shabby either, the soup carried a balanced medley of sweet, sour and spicy notes... with crunchy Pineapples and Cucumbers. It was very refreshing and addictive at the same time. Tom Yum Seafood on the other hand, was a little less-impressive; there was a peculiar taste that we could not discern. After the meal, we discovered a severe thirst which makes us question if they have seasoned too much MSG?
