Lao Sher Tea House (老舍茶馆) @ Burmah Road, Pulau Tikus, Penang.

There are a handful of hidden lunch places in Georgetown, the secret is well-kept by the white collar workers. Lao Sher Tea House (老舍茶馆) is one of them; it has been operating for more than a decade and has been serving wholesome meals to its diners. Like the name implies, it sells a great variety of premium Chinese Tea but at the same time, offers a Chinese and Thai-influenced menu. Visitors can sip on the slowly brewed Chinese Tea while enjoying the dishes. Prices are very reasonable considering the generous serving portion. There are plenty to choose from and we did not manage to try most of the menu. Nevertheless, we love the home-cooked factor here and how the place runs like a private kitchen... definitely worth checking out.

Padpet Fish (Rm 38)

Lor Bak (Rm 12)

Salted Fish Kai Lan (Rm 15)

Those who are in the know would order their home-made Lor Bak (5-spiced meat wrap). Though the 5-spice factor was not too bold but the texture was meatily-satisfying. It uses cut-meat instead of minced version so it has a more pleasing bite. Salted Fish Kai Lan was alright but we like the factor that the greens were carefully cooked... still crunchy but not too raw. The addition of Salted Fish added a delicate fishy touch to the dish. The winning dish was the Padpet Fish, a Thai-influenced dish with Fried Siakap served over rich, creamy sauce backed by Basil, Kaffir Lime Leaves, Cabbage and Long Beans. The sauce was beautifully concocted to the right thickness... not too rich to complement the Fish but definitely not too diluted with all flavors watered down. The generous use of Herbs made the dish even greater. One of the highly recommended dishes here.
