Garden Sweet Bowl Cafe (糖园) @ Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Under the sweltering tropical heat, icy treats are ever-present affairs; one of the latest dessert spots to get a bowl of flavored Shaved Ice is Garden Sweet Bowl Cafe, along Jalan Tanjung Tokong. It's easy to notice Garden Sweet Bowl Cafe, it caught our attention when we were on our way to Tanjung Bungah from Pulau Tikus. The huge backdrop hanging outside the place gives you instant idea on what the place is about and what does it serve. Inside, it has a simple setting (with basic tables and chairs), it feels like entering someone's home; the place is however, fully air-conditioned. Home-cooked delights like Curry Mee will be available on weekends; on usual days, Garden Sweet Bowl Cafe only offers Shaved Ice (desserts), there are many to choose from, a good stop to cool down in this sultry hot season.

Black Sesame Grass Jelly Shaved Ice (Rm 10.50)

Passion Mango Snow (Rm 11.50)

Dragon Fruit Cultured Ice (Rm 8.90)

Original Milk Snow (Rm 7)

The indecisive would have trouble in deciding what to order. Of all 4 types of Shaved Ice we had, we enjoyed Black Sesame Grass Jelly Shaved Ice the most. The flavor was subtle with a sleek sweetness, the accompany Grass Jelly was surprisingly resilient and chewy (not the soft and mushy type). Dragon Fruit Cultured Ice was an interesting combination, the Dragon-fruit infused Shaved Ice was served with Yakult Shaved Ice, so it was a good balance between sweet and sour. Passion Mango Snow was okay but a tad too sweet to our liking. All in all, if you afford to opt for additional toppings, we would encourage you to do so. The texture tend to be a little monotonous without toppings so it's wiser to add a couple or so.
