An Viet- Vietnamese Casual Dining @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

A great wave of Vietnamese restaurants washed across Penang last year. Hailed from central Malaysia, one of the biggest players in the industry- "An Viet" has finally expanded its operations here in Penang's Gurney Plaza. The name "An Viet" means to "Eat Viet" in Vietnamese, the well-established brand believes in quality ingredients, made from scratch and cooked to order. In other words, they are committed to serve fresh and quality food to your table. An Viet offers broader experience of Vietnamese delicacies than most Vietnamese joints in town... the menu covers highlights from Southern Vietnamese to Northern Vietnamese delights, with unrivaled price tags. A great place to witness and experience the vibrancy of modern Vietnamese cuisine, without putting a dent on the wallet.

Many Thanks to An Viet for hosting us that evening.

Hanoian Style Fish with Turmeric & Dill 河内古法煎鱼 (Rm 23.90 for ala-carte/ Rm 27.90 for Set)

Grilled Rice Paper with minced Chicken 香烤脆皮米饼 (Rm 9.90)

Clam in Coconut Broth 椰汁啦啦汤 (Rm 14.90)

Vietnamese Beef Noodle Special 越式特色牛肉河粉 (Rm 23.90 for ala-carte/ Rm 27.90 for Set)

Vietnamese Baguette with Grilled Lemongrass Chicken 越式棍子面包-烧烤香茅鸡 (Rm 14.90)

It's interesting to note that An Viet observes an initiative to minimize global food wastage. Diners are to choose the the Noodle or Rice portion that fits their appetites. For instance, diners may choose from 120 grams, 160 grams or 200 grams for Rice while the grammage for noodles could vary from 80 grams to 200 grams. If you opted for the smallest grammage and wished to increase later, you may do so at no additional cost.

It's hard to miss Hanoian Style Fish with Turmeric & Dill, almost every table would order this specialty from Hanoi. The fish is first marinated with Turmeric and fried on pan with Dill, it has a rather bold but alluring flavor, to be enjoyed with Vietnamese Vermicelli Noodles and fresh Herbs... dressed over the quintessential appetizing Vietnamese dip (with Fish Sauce). The Vietnamese Beef Noodle Special is another popular item, the broth is lightly seasoned but complex with rich beefy flavor (Hanoian style). The broth is cooked for 12 hours of simmering beef bones, it is served with Vietnamese Beef, Beef Brisket, Shank, Tripe, Tendon and home-made Beef Balls. Top up Rm 4 and make it a set, any set order would come with a small serving of Vietnamese Spring Rolls and Mango Salad.

Fans of Banh Mi should not miss their Vietnamese Baguette with Grilled Lemongrass Chicken... perfectly marinated and grilled Chicken sandwiched between the light, crisp Vietnamese Baguette, dressed with Sriracha and various dips. Flavors and combination (of crunchy greens) are well-balanced. Not a fan of Pate? You may drop a note and have it served as a side instead. To share, the addictively crunchy sweet-savory Grilled Rice Paper with minced Chicken and the tummy-pleasing Clam in Coconut Broth (with a hint of spiciness) are both great choices.

Happiness Yee Sang 幸福鱼生(Rm 39.90)

Caramel Pudding 焦糖布丁(Rm 6.90)

Vietnamese Dip Coffee with Egg 越南特色蛋黄咖啡 (Rm 9.90)

Lime Juice with Lemongrass Lime Sorbet 鲜榨酸柑汁佐以香茅酸柑冰沙 (Rm 10.90)

Ice Blended Coconut 香椰冰沙 (Rm 10.90)

Available from now to end of February 2018, diners in festive mood may add a little auspicious touch to the meal by having An Viet's Happiness Yee Sang, a great combination specially put together for this joyous season. Unlike the traditional Yee Sang, An Viet's rendition has a Vietnamese touch (for obvious reasons); it consists of Banana Blossom, home-made Pickles, Radish, Lotus Seeds, Green Mango, toasted Peanuts, Water Apple, Carrots, Pomelo, Lettuce and fresh Salmon Sashimi. The dressing is their specially crafted Kaffir Lime Leaves-infused dressing. The serving portion is good enough for 5-6 pax.

If you have extra tummy space to spare, go for their desserts. The Caramel Pudding is a decent choice; otherwise, the rich-creamy Ice Blended Coconut will end the meal with a perfect refreshingly sweet note.

  1. My girl and the mum went to one of their KL outlets TWICE! So crowded, service sucked big time but the food was so so so good!!! Hopefully, it isn't like that in Penang, the service.
