Dubu Dubu Seoul Food @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

The month of August welcomes another well-known Korean restaurant- Dubu Dubu Seoul Food. The brand has a few branches in Malaysia; most of them are in KL, the one at Gurney Paragon is the first branch in Penang. As the name of the restaurant would imply, the place serves Korean food; however, we thought the dishes we had were not very "Korean" and more like ordinary Chinese Stir Fry dishes instead. Authentic? Arguable. Nevertheless, we wondered if the meal did not go well as we did not order the correct dishes or the fact that they have yet to stabilize their business operations since they are still new. Nonetheless, it is worth a second look to check on their improvements, probably a couple months later. Dubu Dubu Seoul Food is located on the Lower Ground floor of Gurney Paragon Mall, right beside 600 CC and Daiso.

Kimchi Beef Gogi Set (Rm 18.90) comes with 3 side dishes and a bowl of soup. Unlike most Korean restaurants, Dubu Dubu Seoul Food serves Purple Rice (or known as Black Rice); the sides were okay. We like the Kimchi for being crunchy and perfectly balanced in sweetness and acidity. The soup, on the other hand, was ridiculous. It was served to us at room temperature, not to mention that it was bland, as though we were drinking some sort of eggy beverage. The real disappointment was the main. It was over-seasoned and salted, though the Rice was able to tone-down the saltiness, we still struggled to finish the dish.

It was ironic that the Bulgogi Chicken Udon (Rm 16.90- Set) barely registered any taste. The soup was rather bland and the noodles were nothing out of the ordinary (authentic Udon noodles should be al-dente and no, Dubu Dubu's were soft). Probably I was expecting more from them (considering they are such a huge establishment) but it turned out to be another disappointment. Fortunately, they were generous in serving the Chicken (though the Chicken did not live up to my expectation as Bulgogi meat).
