Monkeycup Cafe @ Chow Thye Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Unlike those conventional cafes in Penang serving the ubiquity of Western Brunch menu, Monkeycup takes a step further by offering menu with a little Thai-influence. The warm brown wooden tone of Monkeycup Cafe channels a calm and relaxing vibe while the long walkway is especially suitable for some portraiture photography. Wallet-conscious customers will be pleased with the affordable prices of the mains, however, it should be noted that the Thai-dishes are not available on Sundays. The location may be a little inconspicuous to some, Monkeycup Cafe is located at Chow Thye Road, opposite to Jenxdan Vegetarian Food and same row as Irrawaddy Fine Foods.

The Thai dishes are not available on weekends and unfortunately, our visit was on a fine Sunday. We had no choice but to go for their Angelababie (Rm 12.80). Angel Hair Pasta well-coated with Cream and served with Chicken Ham, canned Button Mushrooms, Spinach and garnished with freshly ground Black Pepper and Herbs. The overall flavor was okay, though an extra pinch of Salt or extra sprinkle of Cheese Powder would be great. The Angel Hair Pasta, on the other hand, was slightly overcooked but not slouchy; it would be perfect if they are able to perfect the cooking time to grant the pasta an al-dente texture. Also, the dish might be a little monotonous for one to finish it completely.

The temptation to try on their Matcha Cheese Cake (Rm 10.90) resulted in the meal ending on a sour note. We had no idea and explanation on the peculiar sourish after-taste in the Matcha Cheese Cake. The Matcha flavor was pretty strong and the sweetness was well-balanced out. However, we did not quite like the texture though, it did not taste like ordinary Cheese Cake, probably too much gelatin. The Cake has potential but it needs some refinement.
