Tucked away along China Street in the heart of George Town, Jouhan’s Concepts is a new addition to Penang’s cafe scene that dessert lovers wouldn’t want to miss. It brings something a little different to the table—specializing in exquisite French pastries with a delicate Japanese twist. From flaky, buttery creations to refined sweets that look too pretty to eat, each piece is thoughtfully crafted and full of finesse. No mains on the menu just yet (new items in the pipeline apparently). With its spacious layout and cozy seating, Jouhan’s Concepts makes a lovely spot to wind down over some delicious treats.
While we were excited to see the flaky French pastries like Croissant, my better half felt like having something with filling. And so we had the Pain Au Choco Pistachio, the outer layer was flaky with a good buttery aroma but the inner filling was disappointingly thin. A new playful creation- the Rosanova Croissant had Raspberry Jam topped with Raspberry Ganache. Unfortunately, they could not heat up due to the Ganache so the outer layer felt a little dry. The Ganache was sweet and the Raspberry Jam carried a strong acidity. Good as a dessert but not so if you are someone who prefers the buttery, flaky Croissant. We took the opportunity to try on their petite cakes as well. We had the Ryokufu, one with a strong Japanese influence. It has 3 main elements- Matcha, Genmaicha and White Chocolate. The beautiful thing was they were able to control the sweetness to the minimum without compromising the earthy flavors from the Matcha and Genmaicha while the White Chocolate offered the sweet and milky touch to the dessert.
Taste: 7/10 (1-3 bad, 4-7 average, 8-10 good)
