Cai Yuan Xiao Chu 菜园小厨 @ Simpang Ampat, Penang.

Hidden in Simpang Ampat, Cai Yuan Xiao Chu 菜园小厨 is a place where you get to enjoy a homecooked-style Chinese meal right next to a vegetable farm. Be warned- there are plenty of houseflies; the place has no air-conditioner and it can be frustrating for the heat-intolerant. Menu-wise, they have a big variety to offer, mainly the usual Chinese stir-fry dishes. Reasonable price points but if you are seeking for a comfortable space to dine out, this is not a place for you.

Tilapia cooked in 2 ways- Rm50/ kg

Stir Fried Flower Clams with Ginger and Spring Onions (Rm 18)

Guinness Pork (Rm 18)

Stir Fried Tofu with Chinese Leek (Rm 14)

Fu Yong Fried Egg (Rm 10)

Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leaves (Rm 10)

Coconut Tuak (Rm 9)

The best seller and signature dish- Tilapia cooked in 2 ways was good. One side of the Fish was deep fried to a crisp while the other side was steamed. The dish had 2 different textures, we must say we enjoyed this dish a lot. The Guinness Pork received quite a lot of compliments as well, the seasoning and flavor combo was good. None of the remaining dishes disappoint. We found ourselves enjoying their Coconut Tuak too, slightly sweeter than usual but easier and lighter on the palate. The only issue we had was there were too many houseflies around.
