Kim Koe Restaurant 金口煮炒 @ Farlim, Penang.

A place for a quick fix over Chu Char, Kim Koe Restaurant 金口煮炒 at Farlim is a popular neighborhood Chu Char spot known for its inexpensive homecooked-style dishes. The place is partially air-conditioned, with simple setup like any other Chu Char places. But it does not have a printed menu- relying on the server to communicate and place orders. The server would advise on the freshest produce available and recommend dishes according to the number of diners. Be prepared for long waiting time though, the place is also infamous for its service- it takes a while for them to serve the dishes. Do not visit the place if you are in a rush.

Deep Fried Belacan Chicken (Rm 35)

Sweet and Sour Pork (Rm 25)

Tofu with Egg Gravy (Rm 16)

Stir Fried Kangkung with Chili (Rm 18)

Bitter Gourd Egg (Rm 15)

Steamed Three King Eggs (Rm 15)

Hokkien Char (Rm 7/ pax)

The signature Belacan Fried Chicken was our favorite for the day, beautifully-marinated Chicken fried to perfection with a crunch. Not extra dips were necessary, good to go on its own. Unfortunately, the rest of the dishes were standard-average. Another worth-trying dish is probably the steamed Three King Eggs with Salted Egg and Century Egg added. The texture was good and spooned well over rice. We were a little disappointed with the Bitter Gourd Egg though... the green, bitterness of the Bitter Gourd was bold. The Chef just blanched the Bitter Gourd without stir frying, and served with Egg gravy. Definitely not something that we were expecting. Not to say the dishes were bad but not a place that I would go all out to visit for a meal.
