Longrain @ Raja Uda, Butterworth, Penang.

A curious restaurant at Raja Uda, Butterworth- Longrain has little or no relationship with its food offering; the restaurant's location on an upper floor unit making it more mysterious and hidden. But words of mouth spread out as well as positive reviews on social media, Longrain has since received quite a fair bit of attention. Longrain specializes in home-made Pasta, along with some Western-Fusion dishes, the menu is not too big but good enough to suit diners of all age-range. Reasonable prices, good food quality and comfortable air-conditioned space are some of the few good reasons why you should check out this place.

Bread and Butter (Rm 13)

Tagliatelle Pesto (Rm 23)

Squid Ink Pappardelle (Rm 26)

We started off light with toasted Sourdough served with home-made Kombu Butter; the Sourdough was perfectly toasted but we would prefer a slightly thicker texture. Theirs was overly thin and instead of Toast, it felt like biscuit. The Kombu Butter was delicious- perfectly creamy with sleek Umami sweetness and a touch of salinity. Both of our orders- Tagliatelle Pesto and Squid Ink Pappardelle turned out to be very good. The Pesto had the right amount of herbaceous aroma and nutty flavor but not too overpowering. The Chicken was sous-vided first so the texture was plump-juicy but crisp on the outside. A pity that the Tagliatelle was not as al-dente as we hope. We were informed by the proprietor that should anyone wishes for a more al-dente texture for their Pasta, do inform them at the point of ordering or they will cook to the local's doneness instead. The Squid Ink Pappardelle was equally good. Though Tomato-based, the sauce carried an indelible seafood sweetness, made possible by introducing a generous amount of Seafood (like chopped Prawns and Scallops) into the dish. It had the perfect sweet-sour balance to complement the Pasta. Longrain is probably one of the best places when it comes to Pasta in the Butterworth neighborhood.
