One of the very few restaurants that offers an Unagi-focused menu is Unagiya Shin, a newly opened Japanese restaurant at Pulau Tikus that specializes in serving Japanese-styled Unagi. The name speaks for itself, "Unagiya"... a direct translation would be House of Unagi. The menu here revolves around Unagi- be it grilled Unagi or Unagi bowl; along with a mix of popular Japanese grills and delicacies. Items are reasonably priced here- those with deeper pockets can go for the imported Eels; else, the fresh and expertly cooked local Eels work fine. This is a place especially suitable for Unagi lovers.

We started off with the skewered items, the Chicken Skewers were great. We love the salinity of Shioyaki and we could detect a faint coal fire aroma. The Chicken was nicely cooked with a juicy, tender texture. The vegetable options on the other hand, were nothing out of the ordinary. For side, we had Salmon Miso Yaki... with Miso being spread on Salmon and grilled over coal fire. The texture was okay but we did not quite like the Miso here. We thought it was a little salty and monotonous on its own. For mains, the Kitsune Soba was lovely. The broth was clean and easy on the palate, definitely a comforting choice for diners of all age range. The main highlight- the Unaju was made from local Eel. Unlike the Japanese Unagi we usually had, this version possessed an exquisite chewy texture. The sauce was veering towards the salty side as well. We prefer ours to be on the sweeter end. Good experience but overall, we thought it lacked of the wow factor.
