Chǔ Cafe 厝 @ Cintra Street, Georgetown, Penang.

With a name like Chǔ, it paints a picture that the place is offering a homey experience. The newly opened cafe focuses on offering Asian dishes served in Bento style. The menu is not big and mostly featuring Japanese and Korean-inspired dishes but all of them will be served in a stainless steel container. Purists will not like how they serve it as it may be quite inconvenient to scoop the soup or sauces up. The menu has good variety- something unusual and unique; most importantly, reasonably priced. If you do enjoy Korean or Japanese dishes, this place is worth a look. Chǔ Cafe 厝 can be found at Cintra Street, towards the junction to Chulia Street.

Japanese Garlic Ramen (Rm 19)

Gochujang Chicken Rice (Rm 19)

Homemade Kaya Butter Toast (Rm 4.50) and Half Boiled Egg (Rm 3)

Teh O Limau (Rm 6)

We liked how flavorful the Japanese Garlic Ramen was, the texture of the noodles was spot on as well but since it was served in a stainless steel container, the temperature did not last. The soup turned to room temperature faster than expected. Apart from that, we thought it was a good Ramen. Instead of the usual Japanese Chashu, grilled Chicken was used. Despite in the absence of fats, the grilled Chicken carried a sleek smokiness... which introduced another layer of dimension to the dish. Gochujang Chicken Rice was nice too, the classic combo of Gochujang-seasoned Chicken with Rice needs no explanation. Our only complaint was the Kimchi, which was believed to be over-fermented and hence, carried overly strong acidity.
