Tok Ma Malay Kitchen @ Kimberley Street, Georgetown, Penang.

While there are plethora of Halal choices in Penang, we don't have much to offer when it comes to Halal Cafe but with the opening of Tok Ma Malay Kitchen, our Muslim friends can now have more choices to choose from. Nestled in the newly revamped shop lots towards the end of Kimberley Street, Tok Ma offers Malay dishes in both traditional and creative ways. The menu comprises of a list of traditional Rice sets with some classic Appetizers as well as a handful of inventive Pasta dishes (with traces of Malay influences of course). Given the place is fully air-conditioned, this is one of the few places where you can dine-in comfortably while enjoying good Malay food. If you do not already know, Tok Ma has a presence in Cubo Park, Tanjung Tokong as well.

Masak Lemak Udang Pasta (Rm 16.50)

Rojak Cucur Platter (Rm 11)

For a start, we had the Rojak Cucur Platter... with stuffed Fried Tofu and Cucur Udang, served with Rojak sauce and sweet Chili sauce. Both were equally delicious; the texture was amazing and the dips were spot on. Masak Lemak Udang Pasta was a playful but successful dish. On the menu, it says Fettuccine will be used but the texture was not anything like the Italian pasta. The noodles were slouchy and a tad too soft to our liking. Noodles-aside, the creamy gravy was toothsome... with a discernible sweetness. The serving portion was a little small for this dish though. For the traditional rice set, we had Assam Pedas Tilapia Merah... pan fried Tilapia Fish Fillet served in a pool of Assam broth. It was not as acidic as we would have expected but we loved the fact that they have pan fried the fish fillet... which offered a firmer, meatier bite.
