Cafe World War II @ Ghee Hiang Beach Street, Georgetown, Penang.

One of the oldest brands for Tambun Biscuits- Ghee Hiang is known for churning out pastries and biscuits but they have recently welcomed a nice addition to their outlet at Beach Street... opening up a new cafe inside the shop. Unlike Teels at the Burmah Road branch, Cafe World War II offers a local, Chinese menu featuring an array of Hainanese breakfast items (like Toasts/ Soft-Boiled Eggs), Rice dishes and some specialty Coffees. Nothing spectacular on the interior decor nor seating arrangement but a simple space over a casual meal. But do avoid peak hours when planning your visit unless you want to to sign up for a long-hour meal and muscle your way through to get the orders served on your table (we did not have a pleasant experience if you must know).

Steamed Roti Kahwin (Rm 4.20)

Pumpkin Kaya and Butter Toast (Rm 4.20)

Fried Crullers with Soft Boiled Egg (Rm 5)

Stir Fried Minced Chicken with Basil Rice (Rm 8.90)

Chicken Vindaloo Rice (Rm 8.90)

While the Rice dishes did not wow us specifically, they did not disappoint... particularly the Chicken Vindaloo, which we thought it worked very well with rice. On the toasts, Pumpkin Kaya and Butter Toast was okay... the selling point here was obviously the Pumpkin Kaya; not very Pumpkin but could taste a hint of it. Fried Crullers with Soft Boiled Egg was a playful creation, but to our surprise, the combination worked... a pity that the Fried Crullers were stale though. Nothing beats the Steamed Roti Kahwin... it was originally Butter and Kaya but they were running out of Butter so they replaced Peanut Butter for me, without informing me beforehand. Also, the Bread was not properly steamed and the texture was somewhat off. Pretty disappointed with the quality after an hour and half wait.

Black Coffee (Rm 2.50/ cold)
