One of the popular Japanese restaurants at Butterworth- Samurai Ramen (known as Samurai BBQ at Butterworth)... has recently expanded its business operations to Penang island, opening a new branch at Summerskye Bayan Lepas... a stone's throw distance away from Penang International Airport. While both outlets' menus may look almost identical, the new branch at Summerskye seems to have its focuses on Ramen (and thus, the name Samurai Ramen). Save for Sushi, the Japanese restaurant has quite a variety of Japanese delights to offer, from Zen Sai (Japanese Appetizers) to Japanese Salad, grills, Yakimono, Ramen, Don and Bento set.
Hotate Ramen (Rm 25.90)
Smoked Duck Ramen (Rm 22.90)
BBQ Chicken Set (Rm 19.90)
We tried 2 of their Ramen dishes- Smoked Duck Ramen and Hotate Ramen; both shared the same broth but with different toppings. We liked the light and crispness of the broth... easy on the palate yet packed with flavors. The Ajitsuke Tamago was expertly done as well... runny Yolk and boldly flavored. The generosity in toppings also added some marks but we thought the serving portion could be larger... more broth and noodles would be more justifiable for the price. The Chicken skewers on the other hand were... nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, we thought some of the combinations were overly playful to us.... the one with Cheese felt like a Western dish in lieu of Japanese Yakitori.
