Hygge Dining & Bar @ Kuala Kangsar Road, Georgetown, Penang.

The corner of Keng Kwee Street (famous for the Penang Cendol) and Kuala Kangsar Road welcomes a new addition- Hygge Dining & Bar... a casual dining spot that offers an east meets west menu. A Chef by profession and having trained in big establishments in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the proprietor has decided to a leap and venture into his own food business... introducing some of his best creations to Penang. The menu sees a nice blend of Asian and western dishes, with a nice local twist. It has quite a relaxing atmosphere- soft music background and well-spaced tables and chairs; the place is most suitable for casual meet ups or gatherings. The upper floor is cozier but dimmer, though it would be ideal for a booze, the cafe has yet to roll out its alcohol menu (but soon). The space on the upper floor is also available for private functions (reservation is required).

Many Thanks to Hygge Dining & Bar for hosting us.

Hygge Signature Laksa (Rm 28)

Pan Seared Barramundi Fillet (Rm 29)

Hygge Nasi Lemak (Rm 10/ promo rate)

Truffle Fries (Rm 10)

Butterfly Pea Assam Boi Soda (Rm 12)

Watermelon and Mint Soda (Rm 12)

The dish with the most returning customers and one of the best sellers of Hygge would be the Hygge Signature Laksa. Unlike any ordinary Curry Laksa in Malaysia, the broth is cooked using loads of Prawns and Flower Crabs... simmered for hours to fully accentuate the flavors of the sea. The seafood flavor is so rich and it almost feels like eating a seafood broth soup instead of a Laksa. The dish is good on its own but even better with a dash of Lemon juice and a spoonful of their home-made Chilies. The addition of acidity increases the depth while the Chilies introduces a peculiar smokiness which makes it instantly becomes multi-dimensional. The price is a little steep but definitely worth the experience. Equally note-worthy would be their Hygge's rendition of Nasi Lemak... cooked using long-grained Rice and served with a lip-numbingly hot home-made Sambal; best to wash down with their unusual but delicious Sodas.
