One of the few Ramen joints outside of central Georgetown and Tanjung Bungah area, Uchino Ramen is one of the latest additions to the Penang Ramen scene. Found at one of the shop lots opposite to Queensbay Mall, the new kid on the block positioned themselves as a Ramen joint that serves Kyushu-styled Japanese Ramen which is known for its rich, creamy Tonkotsu broth. While it places great emphasis on the Ramen menu, there are other options for non-Ramen eaters as well. The Japanese Don series has something interesting to offer, as well as some classic Japanese snacks and sides. Mid-range prices but legit taste, at least pretty close to those in Japan.
Uchino Ramen (Rm 22.80)
Kurokami Ramen (Rm 22.80)
Takoyaki (Rm 9.80)
Like most Ramen joints, there are a few choices up to grab. The signature one would be the one named after their shop name- Uchino Ramen; which pretty much consists of the standard Ramen toppings like Japanese-styled Chasyu, Bamboo Shoots, Black Fungus, Nori, Spring Onions and a halved Ramen Egg. The pork broth had an in-depth meat flavor with a mild spicy kick, the noodles were expertly cooked with addictive, al-dente texture; the whole package was delicious and tummy-satisfying. Another attempt- Kurokami Ramen was pretty much similar to the Uchino Ramen except that there were traces of the Garlic Oil floating on top of the broth. The toppings were similar but the broth registered a bolder meaty notes. Both were equally delicious but we were a little underwhelmed with the Ramen shop not providing raw Garlic and Vinegar to diners.
Takoyaki was a little less-impressive, the filling felt a little scarce for the proportion. The Octopus was insignificant and the it was almost like biting onto cooked flour. The pickled Ginger was missing either. A little on the expensive side for this portion.
