Baba Phang 峇峇之家 @ Sri Bahari Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Diners are spoilt for choices especially when it comes to Nyonya Food at Sri Bahari Road, just that stretch of road itself, there are 3 Nyonya Restaurants. Few doors away from Ceki, Baba Phang 峇峇之家 is equally popular and the crowd can be seen in the evenings. It is however, relatively quieter during the day time. Like any Nyonya restaurants, the menu features many familiar Nyonya delights, including soups and desserts. Prices are of restaurant-standard. While there were some hits and misses, the serving portion was generally more generous than its competitors. Worth checking out if you yearn for Nyonya food.

Kerabu Kacang Botol (Rm 22/ large)

Stir Fried Potato Leaves with Sambal (Rm 15/ small)

Perut Ikan (Rm 22/ small)

Kapitan Chicken (Rm 22/ small)

Otak-Otak (Rm 5)

Acar Rempai (Rm 6)

Pengat (Rm 6)

Pulut Hitam (Rm 5)

Sago Gula Melaka (Rm 5)

Steamed Rice (Rm 2/ bowl)

As soon as we were seated, a plate of Acar was served to us... as "Appetizers". Though we had the right to reject, we did not do so, merely for the curiosity and novelty. The Acar was pretty standard-average and for Rm 6, we thought the portion was a little too small. Favorite dish of the day was Kerabu Kacang Botol... winged Beans served with dried Shrimp-like nutty elements and dressed with citrus Lime juice. The concoction was most appetizing, it can be seriously addictive, especially with the mild spiciness. Equally delicious was the Kapitan Chicken... the Curry packed a powerful punch with in-depth flavors that would go very well with Rice. Like-wise, Perut Ikan was not shabby either. The dish registered salty, sweet, sour and spicy notes, with crunchy-soft texture; though some of us would prefer the dish to be more acidic. While we were happy with the mains, we were disappointed with the desserts; none of them was calorie-worthy, the Pengat was rather watered-down. I'd save more rooms for the Otak-Otak though (which took them more than half an hour to serve).
