Tambun Garden Restaurant (食家村) @ Simpang Ampat, Penang.

It does take some navigation skills to locate Tambun Garden Restaurant, the restaurant completely hidden from the main road. It is well hidden in one corner of a residential area in Simpang Ampat; right next to a small river, the restaurant offers an extensive Thai-influenced delights. The place is huge and could accommodate many guests at one go. It has a modern Balinese decor that exudes the somewhat "zen" atmosphere especially with the greens around. Aplenty choices with reasonable price tags but not easy to find the place. From Batu Kawan, head to Simpang Ampat direction and cross the overhead bridge. Go straight and pass the Traffic Light, shortly on your left, there will be a signage directing you to Tambun Garden. Drive along the narrow alley and you will find it at the end of the road.

Thai-styled Pork Trotter (Rm 34.30)

It was not an easy choice to decide what to order at Tambun Garden but the helpful server recommended a few signature dishes to us. We started off with Thai Kerabu with Smoked Duck Breast which comes in a huge portion. It was basically julienned raw Mangoes (with Cucumber and Carrots) dressed in a refreshing Thai sweet and sour sauce, served with Cashew Nuts and thickly sliced Smoked Duck Breast. The concoction was slightly sweet but the juicy crunch with a gentle heat was a good start to the feast. Steamed Chicken with blanched Bean Sprouts was exactly what you get for a standard Chicken Rice. While Tambun Garden's rendition was okay, we did not think it was particularly outstanding and worth eating. Steamed Flower Clams and Squid was another mediocre dish, the sauce was too sweet and carried a peculiar preserved Plum (Assam Boi) flavor. The Squid was not as fresh as we would have hoped either.
