Bibik's Kitchen Nyonya Cuisine @ Sri Bahari Road, Georgetown, Penang.

There is a sudden influx of Nyonya restaurants in Penang and Bibik's Kitchen is one of them. Quietly opened in late 2017, Bibik's Kitchen positions itself as one of the intimate family restaurants in the neighborhood. It started out when the proprietor's family and friends started to order home-cooked Nyonya food from her and it sparked her interest in running a restaurant. The menu is simple but covers most of the essential Nyonya delights. We did not think the place is very authentically Nyonya but we did enjoy the home-cook factor. It is also suggested that before placing your order, always check with them on the prices, we were overcharged on our visit (on certain dishes), not too sure if they are the actual prices but it certainly did not quite reflect the same consistency on their menu (we did not manage to check with them as we only realized that after returning home).

Kiam Hu Kut Curry (Rm 18/ it says Rm 14 on the menu but we were charged Rm 18)

Assam Laksa Kerabu (Rm 8)

Inche Kabin (Rm 30/ it says Rm 14 on the menu but we were charged Rm 30)

Ulam Kacang Botol (Rm 10)

Mix Colored Rice (Rm 3.50)

Bee Koh Moy (Rm 4)

It was a good start with Assam Laksa Kerabu, it was a concoction made from those key Assam Laksa ingredients like Cucumber, Onions, Torched Ginger, Mint Leaves; it tasted quite similar to Assam Laksa sans the Noodles and Shrimp Paste. The Kiam Hu Kut Curry was okay but it lacked the 'X' factor, as though it was just an ordinary curry with a hint of Salted Fish. The Ulam Kacang Botol was a disappointment, we were expecting uncut, raw Winged Beans but it turned out to be a measly portion with Pineapples, Cucumber and some Cherry Tomatoes; the Sambal Belacan was not any impressive either. Inche Kabin tasted fine but for Rm 30 (just a Chicken Thigh/ 6 pieces), we thought it was a rip-off.

  1. Even if the food is good, overcharging always leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Isn't funny how there usually is no undercharging going on?

  2. Not authentic nyonya? Brings to mind the expensive one we went to once - such a disappointment!

  3. Can't remember the last time I had kiam hu kut curry, used to be mom's dish for special occasions.

  4. Almost double of the original price! Lesson learn, check the bill before paying!
