Hua Hee Restaurant (欢喜中餐厅) @ Sungai Ara, Penang.

Opened in late 2016, Hua Hee Restaurant has quick become one of the favorite dining spots for the factory workers nearby and the nearby residents. The restaurant offers plethora of genuine home-styled Malaysian Chinese cuisine; staples are available but parents will be relieved to hear that there are plenty of kids-friendly options. While classics can be found here, expect to see some with a creative twist. Reasonable price points, sincere serving portions with flavorful dishes, the fully air-conditioned restaurant is suitable for any casual family meal, or a quick lunch to fuel your day.

Petai Fried Rice 臭豆炒饭 (Rm 9/ small)

Mango Chicken (Rm 16/ small)

Claypot Seafood Beancurd 沙煲海鲜豆腐 (Rm 12/ small)

Stir Fried Four Season Vege 四大天王(Rm 15/ small)

Nyonya Prawns 凤梨虾 (Rm 32/ small)

Bitter Gourd Egg 苦瓜蛋 (Rm 8/ small)

For those who seek for something unique, go for their signature Petai Fried Rice- each rice has the distinct grains and beautifully imbued with a delightful charred aroma and slightly chewy fried exterior. The Petai had not done much in its aid here except to offer a slightly nutty texture and vegetal flavor to the dish. With condiments like Chilies, Onions, Carrots, Shrimps and Egg, the dish can be dangerously addictive. We love the texture of the Tofu and the wonderful variety of condiments (crunchy greens as well as some Seafood) but we thought the gravy was a little salty on its own and therefore, would be perfect to spoon over rice.

One of the favorite Malaysian delights- stir fried Four Season Vege is a common dish in most Malaysian Chinese restaurants but not all can passed the test, it had every box ticked. The Sambal Hae Bi (dried Shrimp) flavor was bold and the Chili paste was delicious; the vegetables were meticulously cooked to the right crunch. The Nyonya Prawns were equally good, though not as plump as we would have hoped, the flavors were robust and given the price tag, it was well-worth the money.

Mango Chicken was a let down, we expected the restaurant to serve whole Chicken Thigh but instead, we got thickly battered deep fried Chicken strips (breast meat) topped with measly Thai Mango Salad. Not that the taste did not shine but not to our preference. Also, it would be better if they could be more generous with the Thai Mango Salad, at least to cut through the greasiness of the Chicken. We did not quite enjoy Hua Hee's rendition of Bitter Gourd Egg too, at least we did not expect it to be in the form of an Omelette... we'd prefer the crunchy thinly sliced Bitter Gourd blanketed with luscious-silky smooth translucent Egg.
