Close to the border of Penang and Kedah, Machang Bubuk is a quiet neighborhood within Bukit Mertajam but the food scene is not as vibrant as compared to the town center of Bukit Mertajam but with the opening of Gua Gua's Store, the cafe scene gets a little more exciting. Operating in newly refurbished annex attached to a classic wooden village house, the space at Gua Gua's Store is rather limited and could only accommodate a maximum of 12-15 diners at a time. It does not offer any main but a small dessert-focused menu featuring a few types of the proprietor's home-made cakes. The snug little space feels as comfortable as home (otherwise if it gets crowded); it can be quite an Instagrammable space especially suitable for hipsters.
Pomelo and Grapefruit Cheese Cake (Rm 10)
Nangka/ Jack Fruit Cheese Cake (Rm 10)
Creme Brulee (Rm 10)
Passion Fruit Honey Drink (Rm 7)
We were amazed by the innovative home-made Cheese Cakes that come with unconventional flavors. The Pomalo and Grapefruit Cheese Cake was one of its kind, it possessed the quintessential cheesy element that any Cheese Cake connoisseurs would agree yet, with a refreshing depth. The pulpy Pomelo and Grapefruit provided a sleek bitterness to the creamy-sweet firm custard-like cake while the citrusy element cuts through the creaminess and offered a refreshing bite.
Another proud creation of Gua Gua- the Nangka Cheese Cake was equally amazing. The tropical Jack Fruit is sweet in nature but they have managed to balance the sweetness of the cake. It was spot on... bold Jack Fruit flavor paired with creamy-cheesy texture; though it might be an acquired taste, the combo worked for us. We washed them down with a glass of Passion Fruit Honey Drink.
