If classic Hot Pot/ Steamboat is what you crave for during this rainy season, make your way to Chuan Yee Charcoal Steamboat. The Hot Pot specialist is well-known for those in the know, rumor says that the Chef originates from the same kitchen as Yi Bing Qing Fish Head Steamboat (at Nagore Road). Chuan Yee serves the communal broth in milky white hue, with the Deep Fried Fish (Head) served separately. Sets are pre-fixed but those with big appetite can always have the extra orders. Prices may seem on the higher side but they commensurate with large serving portion. The demand is high here so making advance reservation may be a wise choice. Chuan Yee Charcoal Steamboat is tucked in one of the heritage houses at Kek Chuan Road, off Macalister Road, Georgetown.
Set A- Fried Fish Steamboat (Rm 70)
Choose between Deep Fried Fish or Fresh Fish, we had the former choice. The Fish meat was firm and fresh, crisply deep fried till perfection. On the milky broth, the texture was smooth with a mellow milky-after taste, not too sure if milk was added but there was a hint of Soy Bean Curd stick in it. The Set we ordered consisted of Meat Balls, Fish Balls, Deep Fried Fish, loads of crunchy greens, Bean Curd Puff and Seaweed, garnished with a chock-full of Coriander. The deliciously flavorful broth gets richer and sweeter when ingredients are added in. Set A was too huge for the three of us and we struggled to finish all items; the set best serves four we reckon.
Their Deep Fried Fish Skin is not to be forsaken as well- shattering crisp with spot-on seasoning. As far as dipping sauce is concerned, there's a corner for diners to handpick their preferred dipping sauces... free flow.
