Approximately 8 km away from Sungai Petani town, Chia Bee is known as a recreational spot ideal for fishing as well as a place to feast on freshwater fishes. The restaurant is tucked away from the main street and can only be found with navigation system. Once you are near to the entrance, follow the signage and make your way through the forest and a row of light-industry factories; the restaurant can be found at the end of the road. There are two fishing ponds side by side, right next to the restaurant. The heat-intolerant might be frustrated as the place is not air-conditioned but diners are to be rewarded with a serene scenery. Those who are keen can try their luck at the pond (3 hours for Rm 30, fishing tackle and tools must be prepared by the fishers), the harvest can then be cooked and served at the restaurant. The menu is not big but you can tell their effort in serving the best-quality dishes. Food's standard but this could be a nice place to stop-by for a quick and short weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle city life.
Steamed Udang Galah with Chinese Wine (Rm 130 per kg)
Oil Poached Patin (Rm 34 per kg)
Steamed Cat Fish with minced Ginger sauce (Rm 48 per kg)
Freshwater goodies in their unadulterated best, the Steamed Cat Fish with minced Ginger Sauce was well-executed. Pockets of fats and pristine white flesh were best enjoyed with the zingy Ginger sauce. The fish was fresh and the flesh was firm; with a nary of unpleasant fishy stench. Patin was equally fresh and savory but I'd personally prefer the fish to be steamed. Fresh River Prawns were undoubtedly amazing, the sweetness of the alluring golden Roe spoke for itself.
Stir Fried Yellow Noodles (Rm 10)
Stir Fried Qing Long Leaves (Rm 10)
Claypot Tofu (Rm 9)
We assuaged the guilt by having some crunchy greens, the Stir Fried Qing Long Vegetables were alright, a nice blend with the sweet, crunchy Bean Sprouts. It could be better with some crushed Dried Flounder though. Stir Fried Yellow Noodles on the other hand, was disappointing. The noodles were slouchy and the dish was veering towards the salty side. Claypot Tofu was equally disappointingly average too.
Fresh Coconut Juice (Rm 3.50 per Coconut)
