French Crepe is underappreciated here in Penang, we do not have a lot of French Crepe specialists around but recently, there's another member joining the clamoring F&B scene at Icon City, Bukit Mertajam. Circle N Square Dining's menu is French Crepe-focused, not only sweet ones but savory as well (more of a dessert cafe in lieu of full-fledged restaurant). While the menu is small, some of the flavors are fun and creative; at least not the ubiquitous Crepe Suzette. The cafe's on first floor so you will need to find your way up; the space is clean and bright with simple setting. On our visit, they seemed to take quite some time to serve our orders. Unique flavors and fun to eat but some fine-tuning is still required.
Red Velvet Crepe with Lemon Cheesecake (Rm 15.90)
Pandan CocoYam Crepe (Rm 15.90)
Circle N Square Dining seems to be quite good with their presentation; their Red Velvet Crepe was rolled with a generous layer of Lemon-infused Cream Cheese; halved and served with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream and heavily drenched with Chocolate Sauce. The Crepe was cooked to the right thickness and the Lemon-infused Cream Cheese was delicious. The acidity was right on the dot and cuts through the sweetness. However, we could not agree on the Chocolate sauce. We thought the Chocolate sauce overshadowed the flavor; all were vying for attention. In our opinion, the Chocolate sauce was unnecessary.
Pandan CocoYam Crepe paled in comparison with Red Velvet; the texture of the Crepe seems to be thicker and slightly chewier. The inner part of the Crepe was dusted with Brown Sugar and desiccated Coconut; folded and drizzled over Gula Melaka... topped with a Yam-flavored Ice Cream. It certainly reminded us of Kuih Ketayap, well-inflected in the form of Crepe. The Gula Melaka was a tad too sweet to our liking, probably the brand itself was of ersatz quality (too watery in texture and sugary in flavor). It lacked of the caramelized flavor. The Coconut Yam Ice Cream was not any better either, probably Nestle's... the quality was of lower rank. We see potential in both dishes but some refinements are needed.
