Sai Toh Lim (西刀林) Koay Teow Th'ng @ Raja Uda, Butterworth, Penang.

You will be spoiled for choices when strolling along Jalan Raja Uda but try not to be distracted by them and proceed straight to Sai Toh Lim (西刀林). One of the oldest Koay Teow Th'ng specialists at Raja Uda is Sai Toh Lim, a brand that the locals would always go for. It occupies two prominent shop lots right beside the main street of Jalan Raja Uda, behind Petronas Petrol Station. The gigantic signage is eye-catchy and easily recognizable from far, though they may not have the perfect ambiance, but the place is clean and tables are well-separated to ensure sufficient space. It can be windy and chilly to sit near to the entrance too. Ideal for a leisure family breakfast spot.

Dry Koay Teow (Rm 4.30/ Small)

Choose between Soup or Dry as well as your choice of Noodles (Koay Teow/ Yellow Noodles/ Bee Tai Bak/ Hor Fun/ Bee Hoon etc); the soup has a comfortably clean Umami-sweet flavor (not meaty nor with a fish stench) and best of all, not greasy at all. The chunks of minced Pork Meat that comes along with the Koay Teow Soup were delicious, they were airy and most juicy with reasonable seasoning but the highlight should be their home-made Fish Balls that come in an unusual size like a baby's fist! The texture was good, slightly bouncy but not rubbery and the absence of fish stench adds a few marks.

We noticed many regulars seem to enjoy their Dry version and we figured out why. The real draw is their well-spiced, sweet Chili Paste. We doused it together with the noodles, it was not spicy at all but it adds another smoky-sweetness to the noodle-dish. Both options were equally great.
